Rwanda September 2007 - Travel Log
Thursday 20 September 2007
Taken to Jomo Kenyatta for flight to Rwanda -Kigali and get Kigali at about 0955. Met by my favourite person of the trip, Alex Kagaba from Primate Safaris (www.primatesafaris-rwanda.com) who was to be our guide. Get taken to the outskirts of Kigali to the genocide museum - very emotional and terrible, but fabulous how they are trying to educate people. Frank and I both got T-shirts from the shop that say something about learning the lessons from Rwanda. Get taken to Novotel in Kigali for lunch, then drive to Ruhengeri, the main base town for gorilla tracking about 2 hours drive from Kigali - you can see the Virunga mountain range int eh distance ro there. eb route stop off to chat to some children and play games with them./ Note the cleanliness, Paul Kagame, the extreme cultivation, etc. Eventually get to Gorillas Nest Lodge for overnight stay.Friday 21 September 2007 - Rwanda Gorilla Day
We get collected something like 07:30 and get taken to ORTPN offices for formalities and to be assigned a tracker - Francis, the best guide in the forest apparently, guides, etc and group. Then we get driven to the particular location for the gorilla group to which we'd been assigned to track. Ours happens to have the largest known silverback! Lots of comments about Frank being a large silverback! We then set off up the mountain from a starting altitude of about 2,000 metres in the upper terraced slopes of hte volcanoes which is where the park itself begins the other side of a wall. eventually find the gorillas...put thje rest about that here...and only 1 hour. The return back to Grilllas nest for lunch, then get our bits, and get taken by Alex to the Novotel in Kigali. En route we visit the Twin Lakes Bulera and Ruhondo. Then get to Novotel Umubano for an overnight stay.Saturday 22 September 2007 - Rwanda to Nairobi
Alex picks us up after Frank and I managed to get up early and hae a bit of a bird walk in the grounds. Takes us to Kigali airport for our flight back to Nairibi. Get to Nairobi with only 50 minutues to spare for flight to Zanzibar - we have to run! Nairobi we have to select our luggage on the ramp to say whose is whose! Arrive at Zanzibar, nightmare airport, Frank's bag lost, etc, etc. Problems with hotel, Fishermans' Tours and Travel Ltd, etc. Anwyay, afeter lots of hassle, get to hotel Blue Bay Resort - amazing place.
